Animal Welfare

We provide licences and services dealing with a variety of animals.

There is a wide range of legislation in the UK designed to protect the health and welfare of both domesticated and wild animals.

Animal health and welfare legislation is enforced jointly by Craven District Council, Trading Standards (part of North Yorkshire County Council) and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

What Craven District Council do

Licensing of:

  • horse riding establishments 
  • dog breeding establishments
  • animal boarding establishments
  • dangerous wild animals
  • pet shop licensing
  • zoo licences

What Defra do 

  • national animal health and welfare strategy 
  • animal welfare at farms, markets, slaughterhouses 
  • the pet travel scheme 
  • international trade in animals
  • animal diseases - control and surveillance, BSE, Tuberculosis, Scrapie, Foot and Mouth Disease
  • animal by-products
  • wildlife conservation and biodiversity
  • wildlife crime

What Trading Standards do

  • protect the welfare of animals on farms, during transport and at market
  • prevent, control and eradicate animal diseases
  • safeguard human health from diseases which may be transmitted from animals
