Unauthorised demolition of Grade II listed building leads to fine
David Eckersall, the owner of a Grade II listed property, Nutter Cote Farm in Thornton in Craven, was today given a £17,500 fine and ordered to pay legal costs of £3275 after the unauthorised demolition of the building.
The hearing at the Crown Court on 5th January 2017 follows 9 months of legal action by Craven District Council.
Craven District Council had granted listed building consent in December 2015 for some works to the property. However in April 2016 Nutter Cote Farm was completely demolished by Mr Eckersall
Nutter Cote Farm is thought to have been built in 1850 and until demolished adjoined Nutter Cote Cottage in a row of 3 Grade II listed dwellings. The demolition resulted in not only the loss of Nutter Cote Farm but also harm and damage to the neighbouring Nutter Cote Cottage.
David Smurthwaite, Strategic Manager for Planning and Regeneration at CDC said
"This is a demonstration of the council's resolve to take whatever steps are necessary to protect the district's listed buildings. The listed building consent and planning permission did not permit the total demolition of Nutter Cote Farm and in carrying out this demolition substantial harm has been caused to the heritage significance of the listed building. .
Today's fine sends out a strong message that unauthorised work, resulting in the loss of historic buildings, will not be tolerated and we wanted to publicise the action the Council will take if planning consents are ignored."
