Household waste - green domestic bins

The green bin is for general (non-recycling) refuse. Collection frequency is once every two weeks (alternate with your blue recycling bin).

Please note: certain properties may not be suitable to be issued with a wheeled bin.  In such cases these will be provided with lilac refuse sacks each fortnight.

What not to put in the bin

The bin/bag is to only be used for waste that cannot be recycled or composted
Please do NOT put the following in your green bin or lilac sacks:

  • Building materials
  • Soil and rubble
  • Some types of clinical waste
  • Asbestos
  • Large bulky items (e.g. furniture)
  • Electrical items
  • Toxic/hazardous materials such as car batteries, motor oil, paint, corrosive materials
  • Hot ash (can go in the green bin once cooled)

Please note: the majority of the above items can be taken to your nearest household waste recycling centre, free of charge, however a charge will be made to dispose of builders' waste such as rubble, plasterboard, bricks, glass, soil, bathroom ceramics such as baths, toilets, tiles etc. Please see Household Waste - disposal sites for a full list of items which are now chargeable.

Placing your refuse out for collection

All collections commence at 6.30am, so please make sure your wheeled bin or lilac bag is out for collection as soon as possible on collection day, or place your bin at the edge of your property boundary the night before your collection.

Please note: we have a no side waste policy which means any waste that is placed alongside your bin will NOT be collected.  All refuse must be contained within your bin with the lid closed.  If you are on a sack collection, we will only collect our lilac coloured sacks.  Any additional waste can be taken to your local household waste sites, free of charge.

Assisted collections

We offer an assisted collection service for those finding it difficult to put out their refuse and recycling for collection. To apply for assisted bin collections please complete the Apply online for assisted wheeled bin collection or you can complete our pdf icon Request for assisted collections [88kb]. Please see our Assisted refuse collection page for more details.

Missed collections

In the event that we have missed your household refuse collection, complete our report a missed recycling/refuse collection form.

Please note: if the bin was not out for collection in time or if it contained any contaminates we will NOT return to empty it until the next scheduled collection.  If there are recyclables in the bin, the collection crew may leave a notice on your bin asking you to remove the items before your next collection.

Large families

If you need further help, arrangements can be made to help those who need a larger or extra green bin for their non-recyclable waste. An application form will need to be completed, and an assessment may be carried out before any extra or larger bins are issued. A larger bin will be considered for households with more than six persons permanently living at the property. To apply for a larger bin please complete the online form  or word icon download a form [75kb] or contact our Customer helpline on 01756 700600.
