Recycling bins and bags

Information on what can and cannot be placed in the blue recycling bins and bags.

Requesting new, additional, or replacement blue bins and bags

If you wish to request a blue bin or bag or report a missing or damaged bin, please complete our Request a new/replacement blue bin/blue bags form.

Please note that in cases where a bin is a first issue, has been damaged, lost or stolen or where a property previously provided with a container no longer possesses a bin, it is Council's policy to make a charge for the bin.

If you are moving into a new or previously empty property and wish to request commencement of waste and recycling collections, please contact Customer Services on 01756 700600.  You must be registered for Council Tax to be eligible for household waste recycling collections.

Blue bag - paper and cardboard

Collection Frequency: Every two weeks (alternative week to the green bin or lilac bags collection).

What to put in your blue bag


Paper Portrait

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Brochures
  • Junk Mail
  • Envelopes (excludes window envelopes)  
  • Wrapping paper (excludes foil/holographic)
  • Office/Writing paper

Tip: There is no need to remove staples, but please remove any tape


cardboard portrait

  • Cardboard packaging
  • Food Packaging (e.g. cereal boxes, food sleeves, egg boxes)
  • Toilet/kitchen roll inserts
  • Greeting Cards

Please ensure there is no food waste on any cardboard placed in the bag

We will not accept

  • Hardback books
  • Hardback directories
  • Window envelopes
  • Wallpaper
  • Jiffy Bags
  • Normal household waste

If your bag is found to contain any items other than paper and cardboard, we will not be able to empty your bag.  It will be your responsibility to remove any contaminating items before your next collection.

Excess paper and cardboard

Additional paper and cardboard will be collected if placed in a carrier bag and placed alongside the blue bag for collection.

Additional blue bags can be collected from our offices at 1 Belle Vue Square, Broughton Road, Skipton, BD23 1FJ.  Blue bags can also be requested online by completing our Request a new/replacement blue bin/blue bags form or by contacting Customer Services on 01756 700600.

Please do NOT use a refuse sack as this may be mistaken for household waste and will not be collected.

Blue Bin - glass, cans, plastic bottles and cartons (liquid food & beverage)

Collection Frequency: Every four weeks

Please note: certain properties may not be suitable for a blue bin, in such cases we will issue a recycling pod for their recyclables.

What to put in your blue bin....

We will not accept...

  • Pottery or ceramics
  • Window glass
  • Light bulbs
  • Pyrex
  • Spectacles

Please rinse out all glass and jars before placing in the bin

Tip: There is no need to remove the labels

  • All food and drink cans
  • Biscuit/Confectionery tins

We will not accept....

  • Aluminium foil
  • Crisp packets
  • Pots and pans
  • Paint tins
  • Cutlery

Please rinse out and squash cans before placing in the bin.


Household aerosol cans
Please discharge all contents and air and remove caps.

Plastic bottles (Types 1 & 2 only)

  • Fabric conditioner bottles
  • Any plastic bottles that bear the Type 1 &  2 recycling logos

We will not accept...

  • Margarine tubs
  • Yogurt pots
  • Ready meal trays
  • Plastic carrier bags
  • Plastic film
  • Plant pots
  • Vending cups

    Tip: Bottle tops can be placed in your blue bin

Cartons (Liquid Food & Beverage type only) 
- NEW from 1 April 2016


  •  Soup Cartons
  •  Milk Cartons
  •  Drink Cartons

Please ensure that all contents have been disposed of before placing in the bin.

Only waste placed inside the wheeled bin will be collected.  Please ensure the lid is closed.
