Advice and ideas to tackle rural fuel poverty

ACRE and the Network of Rural Community Councils (RCC) have produced two free practical guides to help rural communities keep warm and tackle fuel poverty by cutting heating bills this winter. The Energy Efficiency and Affordable Warmth community guides, produced in partnership with Calor Gas, aim to help people reduce spending on fuel by using energy more efficiently in their homes. These can be downloaded below:

Fuel cooperatives

If you live in an area that does not have mains gas then there is a very good chance you heat your home with oil or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). In the past two years the cost of heating oil has rocketed and many householders are struggling to pay the increased bills. One way of reducing the cost of oil is to join a buying co-operative. The idea is simple: a group of people in the same area join together and order their heating oil in bulk; all members pay the same price per litre regardless of the size of their order. This is particularly helpful to those on low incomes who would otherwise be penalised for small orders.

Rural Action Yorkshire are able to provide assistance setting up an oil buying cooperative.

Winter Plus Project

Winter Plus is a new project for 2015/16.

Age UK (North Craven) is working in partnership with Craven District Council, Craven Home Improvement Agency (Yorkshire Housing) and North Yorkshire County Council to increase awareness of the impact of cold weather on older people and to provide simple practical support in the home to prevent ill-health in winter.

Winter can often be a difficult time and so help is being made available via:

  • An Age UK befriending volunteer who will provide peer support and advice
  • Practical support to help stay safe and well in the home during the winter months. this could be anything from supplying and delivering grit salt to installing grab rails, insulation and minor adaptations to help prevent trips and falls around the home

If either yourself or someone you know needs help to keep warm, prevent illness or accidents - or just someone to talk to - contact Age UK (North Craven) on 01729 823066.
