Self-build and custom housebuilding

The council keeps a register of individuals and associations who are seeking to acquire serviced plots of land in order to build their own homes. This is referred to as the self-build and custom housebuilding register.

Regulations governing self-build and custom housebuilding registers were issued by the government in 2016. The council's register will provide valuable information on the demand for self-build and custom housebuilding in Craven (outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park) and will form a key part of its evidence base of demand for this type of housing. The council will have regard to the register when carrying out its planning, housing, land disposal and regeneration functions. By registering, people will help to build evidence of demand and, therefore, help the council to promote self-build and custom housebuilding in the area. Registers are not catalogues of land for sale - for this please seek the advice of an estate agent or similar professional. Scroll down the page for more information or jump to a particular section using the links below.

Planning

The register may be a material consideration in deciding Planning applications and will form part of the evidence base for the New local plan.

Housing

The register will be considered in developing plans for new housing on council land and in the preparation of housing strategies and the Strategic Housing Market Assessment.

Land disposal

The register will be considered in developing plans to dispose of Council land.

Regeneration

The register will be considered in developing plans for Regeneration of the area.

Headline data on the demand for self-build and custom housebuilding, which is revealed by the register and other sources, will be published in the council's annual monitoring report. However, personal data, such as the names and addresses of people on the register, will not be published or disclosed to third parties. More detail on how we handle personal data is available on the council's Rights of access to information web-page.
