Hundreds of athletes complete the Skipton Triathlon challenge

More than 700 people turned out in glorious sunshine to complete Skipton Triathlon in Aireville Park on Sunday, April 9.

The competitors enjoyed fantastic weather as they took part in in a 400m swim in the Craven Leisure pool, followed by a 22km bike ride out through East and West Marton and Thornton-in-Craven, and then a 5km run around Aireville Park.

Almost half the competitors were taking part in their first ever triathlon and it was an experience to remember.

Tracy Jones said: “It was my first Tri and I loved it, everything was so well organised and routes clear. All marshals and helpers were great - thank you - I'll be back next year to beat my PB!”

Hannah Freudenberg said: “Thank you for a fantastic first triathlon experience! The marshals and event team were amazing and supportive all the way round including the photographers. Well done everyone.”

Michelle Vosper has taken part in the race since 2009 and said: “Great event, so pleased it was run by the local council - all marshals were super friendly, slick organisation and sensible price!”

The event was run by Craven District Council for the first time this year. Bruce Dinsmore, Sports Development Officer at Craven District Council, said: “It was a fantastic day and we had some great feedback from competitors. We’re delighted we were able to put on this brilliant event which attracted a huge range of athletes, from first-timers to elite racers.

“We’d like to thank all our sponsors and supporters for helping us put on the triathlon and make it a great experience for those involved. It certainly helped that the weather was good and we look forward to welcoming athletes back to Skipton Triathlon again in the future.”

The overall winner of the event was Jonathan Dudley, from Leeds Triathlon Centre, who was the only competitor to finish in under an hour, coming home in 59 minutes and 42 seconds, while the first female athlete was Brit Tate, of Hampstead Triathlon Club, who finished in one hour, eight minutes and 29 seconds.

The event was sponsored by The Pentelow Practice Ltd, Myers Building Supplies and Pulse, and supported by Keelham Farm Shop, Sundried, Sportsshoes.com, Harrogate Spa and Birchall.
