Join GB athletes at The National Lottery cheer station in Skipton to support the UCI Road Cycling World Championships

A National Lottery cheer station will be set up in Skipton on Sunday September 29 to support the world-class cyclists in the UCI Road Cycling World Championships.

The Men’s Elite Road Race comes through Skipton at around 9.40am and crowds are expected to gather to cheer on the race.

The cheer station will be outside Skipton Town Hall on the High Street and a number of GB athletes will be present and handing out branded giveaways. National Lottery funding allows British athletes to train full time, have access to the world’s best coaches and benefit from pioneering technology, science and medical support.

The Men’s Elite Road Race starts in Leeds and travels through Otley and Ilkley on the A65 before entering Skipton, via Otley Road, passing along Newmarket Street before travelling up Skipton High Street and up Grassington Road. It will follow the route of the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014, going up past Rylstone, Cracoe, Threshfield, Kilnsey, Kettlewell, Starbotton and Buckden before the cyclists go up over Kidstones and down into Wensleydale.

The Men’s Junior Road Race on Thursday September 26 will also pass through Craven. This event will travel from Richmond, through Leyburn and Aysgarth, and into Craven over Kidstones at around 1.10pm. It will then pass through Cray, Buckden, Starbotton, Kettlewell, Kilnsey and Threshfield before heading off through Burnsall, Barden and reaching Bolton Abbey by around 1.55pm, then along the A59 towards Harrogate.

The full race programme will take place between September 21-29 and will be mainly based around Harrogate.

There will be rolling road closures during the races and details on exact race timings, road closures and parking restrictions can be found by downloading the Yorkshire 2019 iPhone or Android app, or by visiting North Yorkshire County Council’s website here: https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/uci-road-world-cycling-championships

Yorkshire 2019 Ltd is responsible for the delivery of the Championships. The event will be funded principally through DCMS and UK Sport, whilst also receiving support from British Cycling and the start and finish host towns. The UK Government and UK Sport have committed £12 million to the event and a further £15 million has been allocated to develop entry-level cycling facilities across England, delivering a legacy that will transform the sporting fabric of the country.

This year marks The National Lottery’s 25th birthday! National Lottery funding has supported over 6000 athletes since 1997. This allows our athletes to train full time, have access to the world’s best coaches and benefit from pioneering technology, science and medical support. British athletes have won 864 inspirational Olympic and Paralympic medals since National Lottery funding began. Each time you play The National Lottery, you are transforming British sport.
